Wanda Maxwell Vess Weddle of Frederick Maryland passed away on December 16, 2022, at the age of 99.
She was born in Perry County in 1923, the daughter of Daine C. Maxwell and Olive Linscott Maxwell. After graduating from high school, she attended business school in Columbus, Ohio and worked as a secretary, prior to her marriage to Harold Vess in 1945. She and Harold settled in Frederick, Maryland in 1957 and raised their family there. After Harold’s death in 1971 she worked as a legal secretary for six years before her employment for some fourteen years as a secretary, and later administrative assistant to the Frederick County Commissioners’.
She married Robert Weddle of Frederick, Md in 1979. She and Robert were passionate collectors and traders in glassware, beer steins, and antique furniture. They were together for 25 years before his untimely death in 2004. She was also an avid quilter. She was a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, a Girl Scout Leader and longtime member of Calvary Methodist Church in Frederick, Md in 2016 she moved to the continuing care community of Homewood at Frederick where she remained until her death
She was preceded in death by her parents Daine and Olive Maxwell, her husbands, Harold Vess and Robert Weddle, her sister Glenna Palmer, and her two brothers Daine C. Maxwell, Jr. and Galen Maxwell. She is survived by her three children, Phil Vess (Jane) of Baltimore, MD., Dixie Osteen (Michael) of Irvington, VA, and Sue of Drakes, Ohio, six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday December 29 at the JE Humphrey Funeral Home, Shawnee. Friends may call from noon until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Perry County Historical and Cultural Arts Society, P.O. Box 746 Somerset, OH. 43783
