Roger E. “Gene” Brunton 87 of Shawnee died peacefully on Monday August 15, 2022, surrounded by his family in Shawnee, where he had lived his entire life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years A. Yvonne Brunton; his great granddaughter Kirstin Yvonne; grandson in law Dean Atkins; sister and brother-in-law Alice and Jim Denny and his parents Roger C. and Margie Brunton.
Gene was raised in and was a active member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church; he was a heavy equipment operator and a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18; He was also a member of the UMWA; 11 years as an oiler-operator of a Marion 5561 Stripping Shovel for Muskingum Mining; a past member of the Shawnee Fire Department and Shawnee Village Council; he was a former Saltlick Township Trustee, serving multiple terms; a 1953 graduate of Shawnee High School, where he enjoyed playing basketball for Coach Walter Harrop; Gene was a lifelong hunter with his Dad and sons, he hunted grouse, kept coon hounds, fox hounds and beagles; most of all he was a rabbit hunter. He was a member of the Republic Party.
Dad and Mom instilled a good work ethic, self-reliance, and independence in their children and that has passed down to their grandchildren as well. Thanks Dad and Mom.
He is survived by six children Roger N. and Leah Brunton, Gary E. and Veronica Brunton, Charlotte Y. and Rich Hinkle, Christine A. and Rocky Nelson, Gerald C. and Colene Brunton and Regina M. Brunton; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; 1 sister Judith and Pat Shipley; 1 sister-n-law Rose Stickdorn; many nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday August 19, 2022, at the Shawnee United Methodist Church with Rev Charlene Mitchell officiating.
Interment: Shawnee Cemetery
Friends may call from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday at the church.
