Rodney Lee Burgess, age 60, of The Plains, Ohio passed away in Columbus, Ohio on November 13, 2025. Born August 19, 1965, he was a son of the late David L. and Judy C. (Hoy). Burgess. Rodney grew up in New Straitsville, Ohio and was a 1983 graduate of Miller High School where he competed in basketball, baseball, golf, track, and cross country. He graduated from Rio Grande University in 1987 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, but his love of sports led him back to working in education and coaching basketball, tennis, and golf at Athens High School. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents David L. and Judy C. (Hoy) Burgess; maternal grandparents Burdette and Marjorie Hoy; paternal grandparents Lawrence and Ethel Burgess; uncle Jerry B. Hoy; and aunt Ruth E. Burgess. He is survived by his brother David (Tammy) Burgess and nephew Kyle Burgess of Lancaster, Ohio; cousins Suzanne (Al) Gay of Aiken, South Carolina; J.B. (Rachel) Hoy of Portland, Oregon; and Jim (Danielle) Hoy of Groveport, Ohio; and their families. Rodney had a talent to talk to other people and had many friendships over the years, including those with whom he graduated from high school and continued to stay in touch with, fellow coaches and all of the many friends he made over the years. His friends helped him through the medical challenges he has faced since 2019. The family is thankful and grateful for the support of his many friends who transported him to medical appointments since 2019 and during his recent medical issues, visited, called, and sent cards and messages- especially Ron Ricketts. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025 at the J.E. HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME, 118 W. Walnut Street, SHAWNEE, OHIO 43782. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025 at the New Straitsville Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Fitch officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local youth sports program, or a charity of one’s choice, in Rodney’s memory.
