Rita Pompey Obituary

Rita Eileen Pompey, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 14, surrounded by her devoted family. Rita’s life was a testament to grace, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to those she loved. With quiet strength and profound patience, she lived her 85 years with a heart full of compassion, always putting the needs of others before her own.

Born on March 1, 1939, in Corning, Ohio, to the late Thomas H. and Catherine Williams Spray, Rita’s legacy is one of service and selflessness. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Ohio University and dedicated many years of her life to teaching in the Southern Local School District. Before embarking on her career as an educator, Rita worked at the Bank of Corning, where her warm, dependable nature made her a trusted and cherished presence.

Her faith was an important cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Corning, where she found joy in singing with the church choir. Rita also volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, embodying the virtues of charity and kindness. She was a member of the State Teachers Retirement Association and remained an active, engaged member of her community throughout her life.

Rita’s true joy came from her family. She treasured spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love for them was boundless, and she took great pride in watching each of them grow. Her patience, gentle wisdom, and enduring love shaped the lives of those she touched. Rita also cherished the simple pleasures of life—gardening, reading, and family vacations to the ocean, where her calm presence brought a sense of peace to everyone around her.

Rita's unwavering grace extended far beyond her family. She was a true friend to many, always offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a comforting word. Even in her final days, Rita’s grace shone brightly. With quiet strength, she comforted her loved ones, gently reminding them that life continues, and we must carry on with courage and joy in our hearts.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Francis Pompey; her children, Joe (Peggy) Pompey, Carole (Rick) Merckle, Jack (Nancy) Pompey, Lisa (Mike) Horan, Francis (Tom Ritz) Pompey, and Kathy (Tom) Fulk; her sister, Jean Ferguson; her brother, Tom (Martha) Spray; 13 grandchildren, Nathan Merckle, Britnei Merckle, Nick (Sharon) Pompey, Erin (Nick) Searl, Rachael (Jason) Pompey, Courtney (Jeremy) McNutt, Andrew (Shauna) Pompey, Sean (Kristyn) Pompey, Lindsey VanBeusecum, Alex VanBeusecum, Thomas, Emma, and Taylor Fulk; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Rita’s life will be remembered for its quiet strength, steadfast love, and the grace with which she faced every challenge. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her—family, friends, and those who were fortunate enough to experience the depth of her kindness and the peace of her presence.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday November 18, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Corning, with Father Emmanuel Adu Addai officiating. The family will receive guests at the church from 10:30 a.m. until time of service.
